WorkingRE Interviews George Harrison, Summit Producer

WRE:  What prompted you to produce the first Appraisal Summit & Expo?

George:  Looking back on it, I guess there were three reasons.  First, with all the problems appraisers were having in 2008 and 2009, we saw a need to pull them together, and give them an opportunity to exchange information on a national basis.  Second, we believed that while traditional ACE classes might be good, they do not provide the exposure to a wide variety of information from some of the most influential members of the valuation and financial services groups.  Third, it offers exposure to exhibitors who offer a wide variety of timely appraisal services.

WRE:  Why Las Vegas?
George:
There had been an appraiser’s conference in Las Vegas every fall since at least the 1990’s when NAREA/NARA really started it.  I was invited to speak at some of these and got to know several of the “regulars.”  As it happened, there was no conference scheduled there in 2009.  We believed that 2009 was critical for the front-line appraiser to be exposed to the variety of information and exhibits characteristic of a first-class conference at a reasonable cost.  Las Vegas is an excellent location for that, with first-class food, entertainment, transportation and reasonable room rates.

WRE:  How did you select the speakers and topics?
George:
We’ve always wanted speakers and panels on topics of timely concern to appraisers.  This year’s slate provides three keynote speakers: Jim Park, the federal “Appraisal Czar” from the ASC; Bob Murphy of Fannie Mae and Tony Romano of the CFPB, who will address blacklisting.  Additionally, we will have two attorneys who will advise on where and how appraisers are most likely to get into trouble and how to avoid it.  The balance of the presenters are specialists who will address application of modern technology, such as analytics, mobile appraising, apps and improving report quality.  From the very start we have been blessed with a host of excellent, timely and topical presentations.

WRE:  Who is your target audience?
George:
We are here primarily to serve the “boots on the ground” appraiser.  Paramount in our planning is the commitment to provide a quality, meaningful production at a reasonable cost.  This includes not only the fee, but the venue and all other aspects.  Of course, we intend that AMCs will also benefit from the Summit since they are now a part of the profession.

WRE:  Is the Summit approved for CE in all states?
George:
Not exactly, but we feel comfortable that we have covered all the necessary states except for Illinois.  These states have special requirements that make it difficult at this time.  Illinois appraisers may submit a special form with $50 to the Illinois Board to request acceptance of the Summit for CE credit.  For that reason we offer a $50 discount to Illinois attendees and we provide a copy of the form with the transcript at the Summit.  When we have had someone request credit in a state where it is not approved, we apply to that state.  Many states will ACCEPT the approval by the state wherein the course is held.  That covers a lot.

WRE:  What are your future plans for the Summit?
George:
At this point, since each Summit has been more successful than the last, we intend to continue.  Appraising has now become a true profession and as such, professionals will seek the professional development provided both by special experts and exhibits.

WRE:  Are AMCs invited?
George:
Absolutely! What we have seen is that AMCs are very much a part of the profession and have made some substantial contributions.  They are now regulated by state appraiser regulatory boards and are staffed by certified appraisers.  AMCs also exhibit and use the Summit to recruit appraisers.

WRE:  Can someone just attend one day?
George:
Yes, someone can attend for just one day; however it would not be approved for CE credit.

WRE:  What is the fee?
George:
The fee is only $495 for the two days, plus the opening reception on Wednesday evening.  The fee covers the reception, luncheons and all breaks.

Top 10 Reasons to Attend the Appraisal Summit & Expo

  1. Attending the Summit gives you the opportunity to hear from appraisal leaders who are making a difference in the profession.

  2. The Summit is focused on you…the “Boots on the Ground” appraiser, not the “suits.”

  3. Networking…a lot of business communication is done via the phone, email, post, newsletters, company websites, intranets and extranets.  No matter how great they may be, they cannot replace a face-to-face dialogue.

  4. Earn up to 30 hours of Appraiser Continuing Education (This includes pre-Summit education).

  5. It’s affordable…only $495.

  6. Hear what’s going on from a national perspective.

  7. Great door prizes from Exhibitors.

  8. Your participation gives you the opportunity to meet with other appraisers and form a network of resources.

  9. To celebrate your profession and your place in it.

  10. The final reason…it’s just fun!
